Te Awahōhonu Foreest Trust Appoints Chief Executive

The Trustees are excited to announce the appointment of Shayne Walker as Chief Executive for the Trust. Shayne will commence the new position in March.

Serena O’Donnell, Chairperson of the Trust is “pleased to confirm Shayne’s appointment to this critical role. Beyond Shayne’s considerable executive and governance experience, Shayne has valuable insights from having been a Trustee for 10 years with Te Awahōhonu Forest Trust. The selection of Shayne to this role was rigorous and transparent. Appointing one of our own very capable beneficiaries as our CE makes this so much more meaningful.”

The Trust is an Ahuwhenua Māori land trust that administers 23,000ha inclusive of the 10,000ha ahimanawa virgin native forest. Having celebrated success in winning the national Ahuwhenua sheep and beef trophy in 2013, Te Awahōhonu is gearing up for the next stage of growth and will commence harvesting pine trees from its 5,800 commercial forest this year bringing a 55 year strategy to fruition.

Shayne has previously held senior executive roles with Ngāti Porou Holdings, the Bank of New Zealand and Maungaharuru-Tangitū Trust, as well as his work as an independent consultant to several high-profile corporates. Shayne is a current commercial director on several boards including Tātau Tātau o Te Wairoa, Mana Ahuriri, the Hawke's Bay Regional Economic Development Agency and was the retiring Chair of Hawke's Bay District Health Board.

Shayne is “excited to be able to bring my collective experience to benefit my whānau and build on the strong foundation that has been laid by the Trustees and management.” Over the first few months Shayne will transition into the role full time whilst reducing other commitments citing his core role as ‘nurturing our taonga. Our taiao, our whānau and our pākihi’.

The Trust intends holding a wānanga in October and is seeking expressions of interest from rangatahi who may be interested in attending.

Location Te Awahōhonu Forest – Te Haroto

Date 3 ^rd and 4 ^th October 2024

Age Intermediate or High School students

Eligibility Rangatahi whakapapa to a registered owner of Te Awahōhonu Forest Trust

There will be no cost for rangatahi to attend this course.

This will be a great opportunity for some of our rangatahi to connect to their whenua and its history.

The wānanga will be facilitated by ‘Young Animators Education’ introducing the rangatahi to some of the resources needed to excel in the digital world of today. Rangatahi will prepare a basic animation during the course.

The two days will focus on the story behind the name Tarawera. This will allow the rangatahi to connect with their historical past. ‘Young Animators Education’ will work with the rangatahi to create an animated version of these pūrākau narratives.

If a family member passes, like a great totara of the Ahimanawa, sadness

overcomes the family. Te Awahohonu Forest Trust alleviate some of the burden

with the pūtea manaaki, known as Te Rau Karearea. Despite being a mere

contribution, it is a heartfelt gesture to the bereaved. With feathers the great

hawk could soar, gather and provide sustenance.

ELIGIBILITY

Pūtea for Tangihanga will be paid to a whānau -

Of a Beneficial Owner who dies as owner.
Of a Beneficial Owner dying after transferring their shares to a Whānau Trust.
That is Immediate Whānau, they being children taking their parent's place after their parent dies, then their children [mokopuna) after they die, in perpetuity.

In special circumstances the Trustees have the discretion to approve the payment of Pūtea for Tangihanga

Beneficial Owners means an owner registered with the Māori Land Court or a Beneficial Owner who transfers their shares to a Whānau Trust before they die.

Immediate Whānau means a child or children of a deceased Beneficial Owner with Whakapapa to the Whenua where that owner's shares are now held in a Whānau Trust.

The Trust intends holding a Wānanga in late March and is seeking expressions of interest from school students who may be interested in attending.

Location: Te Awahohonu Forest – Te Haroto.

Date: 25th-27th March 2020. This will include two nights sleeping at the Toropapa Huts.

Age of Tamariki: Intermediate or high School students.

Eligibility: Must whakapapa to Te Awahohonu Forest Trust or Ngati Hineuru

There will be no cost for the student to attend this course.

This will be a great opportunity for some of our tamariki to connect to their whenua and its history.

The majority of the Wānanga will be hosted by ‘Young Animators Education’ who will run a workshop that introduces the students to some of the resources needed to excel in the digital world of today. Students will prepare a basic animation during the course. You can visit their website at younganimators.net . for more information.

Topics to be covered:

The first two days will focus on the story of Tane-o-Kura. This will allow the tamariki to connect to the Toropapa stream and learn about conservation measures of the past. ‘Young Animators Education’ will work with the tamariki to create an animated version of the Tane-o-Kura story (or their own conservation project).

On the Thursday night, it is planned that Piripi Smith will talk to the tamariki about the stars and how they connect to our whenua.

Friday will involve the story of how Tarawera got its name and the symbolism within the name for us today. This story will be depicted in mahi toi with the guardians by Phil Belcher. There will be an option for students to produce a carving during the course instead of an animated story.

The 2017 Te Awahohonu Forest Trust Field Days were held on the 1st of April 2017 at Gwavas Station in Tikokino. About 80 whanau attended the day which consisted of an extensive tour of the farm in 4wd vehicles. The weather was beautiful with the ground having dried out just enough after recent rains. The farm and livestock were in exceptional condition! Thank you to the Trustees and farm staff for putting on such an awesome day.
